How a Controversial Bean Found a Home in our Tonka and Coriander Soy Candle
We take pride in creating odd scent requests and this particular one was challenging as well as interesting. How do we create a “Tonka and Coriander Soy Candle”? What is a Tonka Bean? Will it pair well with coriander? We opened up a can of research worms and came up with the answers. Tonka Beans are actually illegal in the US and many other countries for culinary purposes because they contain high levels of coumarin. Coumarin is well known to cause liver damage, heart damage and even cancer when taken in high doses. They are found in South America and prized as a culinary delight. Chefs from all over the world covet them for off-beat recipes in the hopes of achieving their ultimate dish. A slight whiff of just a shave of this potent bean causes one to actually taste carmel and vanilla on their tongue. That’s some intense olfactory power and we had to experiment!! Tonka absolute is so potent, it needs something to even and balance it out. We chose coriander essential oil because of its peppery effect. This herb is packed with a potent selection of amino acids and vitamin C. Our Tonka and Corriander Soy Candle is like nothing we’ve experienced before!
